capital campaign

Portage Center for the Arts was established in 1986, an outgrowth of Portage Area Community Theatre, and we celebrated our grand opening in 1987.

Our building’s original brick edifice was built in 1855 on the northeast corner of Adams and Cook Streets by the Presbyterian Church. Its steeple was toppled by a storm in 1871. In May 1892, fire damaged the interior and the building was sold to the Baptists who renovated and enlarged it.  The Baptist Congregation used the church until 1938, when the building was sold to the Assemblies of God.  In 1986, Portage Center for the Arts purchased the building, renovating it for use as an Arts Center.

In 2013, we announced our plans for a capital campaign that would allow us to make necessary structural improvements and renovations to ensure the integrity of this unique and historic building, as well as enhance the community’s participation in the Arts!

Phase I of construction is complete, visible by our new roof (along with many less visible structural improvements)! Phase II construction was completed in February 2020, and includes improved ADA accessibility on the Adams Street side of the building, along with an ADA restroom, enlarged foyer, and new flooring in the theatre and gallery.

We are accepting funds to help put our final Phase III in motion, which will involve a new backstage wing for enhanced stage access and improved storage, as well as a remodeled sound and light booth, a new HVAC system and lighting system, and a new theatre curtain!

THANK YOU to the greater Portage Community for your support of this endeavor!
